One of the first shoots I attended during my first week with e.tv was an event for the opening of the Stellenbosch Academy of Sport. Rugby is a major part of life here in South Africa and this event was to celebrate the new home of the Springbok Sevens team as well as the Western Province Rugby Institute. National, regional and university rugby teams were present. The residence and training center was unbelievable! There were personal chefs in a huge kitchen, a nice gym with brand new equipment and a pool that would light up in the middle of the courtyard.
The event was hosted by South Africa’s second richest man, Johann Rupert and one of the most famous rugby players, Morne du Plessis. There were even flute players performing for the guests. I went to the event to shadow reporters Andre Du Plessis “AP” and Percivale Young and cameraman Zaid Harris. We had a great time and I realized how important rugby was to the country. I learned a lot watching Percy and AP interview players and coaches. We even made a joke about asking Johann Rupert to take our picture. The night was a blast!
